Newsday article: The bad

Hey kids - it's OK to search - as long as you're over 50!

But the search, with all its risks and pitfalls, may be easier to handle with age, when maturity and strength combine with a sense of mortality and spirituality. Those over 50 or approaching 50 reach milestones and a special place from which to become whole or at peace with themselves and their lives, experts in the field said.

"The 50-plus generation has more patience and wisdom about who they are and what they are looking for by reuniting," said Menafra.

Do you believe that Theresa? I am guessing there is some truth to that since everyone or anything you have searched for has probably died or long forgotten, therefore not the rush. Still I am sure it doesn't apply to everyone.

It couldn't have anything to do with the fact that by that age we have the internet which makes searching possable, or that we have the finances needed to search, or that we can hear that loud ticking of the clock, or that we've matured to the point that we are no longer laying down for stupid laws!
50, a convient age for all concerned don't you think? Newly

What complete bull! This screams to me of once again trying to keep families apart because by the time an adoptee is fifty the chances of bio mom still being alive are much slimmer. So they are encouraging people to wait, so they STILL cant find their parents.

Hey twenty year olds, LOOK NOW. You deserve to know and have a relationship with your birth parents!

I started the search for my missing dad when I was twenty five. The perfect age.

hmm. this statement is right and wrong all at the same time.
it depends which era we are talking about. while its true people from the closed era take longer to search and reunite, maybe thats because the records are closed!!!
i know that more and more younger people are searching earlier.because i belong to a search list.

I think it's totally individual. There are most likely some 18 or 19 year olds who are perfectly capable of conducting a search knowing all the pitfalls, and by the same token there are some 50 or 60 year olds who simply don't have a clue.

It just smacks again to me of people TELLING us what's best for us, instead of ASKING us how we feel.
