Philly Phridays #3: Edgar Allen Poe House

NO ADOPTEE VISIT TO PHILLY WOULD BE COMPLETE without stopping by the homestead of famous orphaned-but-never-adopted writer Edgar Allan Poe.

Located less than 1 mile away from the Philadelphia Convention Center, the house is open daily from 9-5 in the summer and Wednesdays through Sundays the rest of the year.

While living in Philly, Edgar penned the following beloved adoption stories for children:

* "The Pit and the Pendulum"- heartwarming allegory of conflicted adoptee loyalty - sliced in half by the blade, or burned by the hot walls

* "The Gold-Bug" - symbolic search for adoption records in the form of a treasure map

* "The Purloined Letter" - detective is hired to steal back a highly compromising letter the Queen received from her secret illegitimate child

* "William Wilson" - classic split-self disassociated good/bad adoptee

Admission to the Edgar Allen Poe House is always free for adoptees.

Oh OK, real kids can get in for free too.

Free is good, because less than a 10 minute walk down the street is the famous Finnigans Wake, where if memory serves correct it's Irish music downstairs ,rock upstairs, and the best damn fish & chips in the city.

Next week: Where do all the hippies meet?

I'm a big fan of his. I had no idea of his history. We have a little "Poe cottage" here in the bronx. It used to be open to the public some time ago. I'm curious as to what he penned while living there.

Thx guys.

And Improper - LOL thanks. My husband didn't get it. He read it and said, "Those weren't adoption stories"

Poor guy. He has no sense of dark humor
