Adam Herrman: Age Enhanced Photo Released, Adoptive Mother Denies Abuse Allegations

The Wichita Eagle publishes an interview with the adoptive mother of Adam Herrman:

Adoptive mother denies she abused missing boy

The article is astonishing in the constant denial of abuse allegations, sprinkled in with anecdotes of belt 'spankings'. Also in the article is the reveal that many who know about adoption were already aware of: the $700 month stipend that the Herrman's continued to receive even after Adam was missing. Although hey, she claims she sent back the check she received after he turned 18.

Meanwhile, KWCH posted an interview with Adam's adoptive uncle:

Missing Boy's Uncle Blames Sister

And KSN posts fragments of an email sent to them by Crystal Herrman, biological daughter of the Herrmans, who hints it was she and her brother who first tipped authorities to Adam's disappearance:

The biological daughter of Adam Herrman's adoptive parents contacts KSN

Yesterday the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children has released the age-enhanced photo, which has prompted more than a few calls from people who believe to have seen him on Myspace, Facebook, etc.

What do I think happened to him? It's hard to say right now. I'm leaning towards the scenario where he ran away, and somehow got hurt or lost in the woods surrounding his home, but at this point it's anyone's guess.

In the midst of all this coverage, what hasn't come across my Google alerts yet is any type of oversight into post-adoption monitoring, or criticism of the lack thereof. Adam Herrman's sad life, like too many other adoptees, is yet another litany of adult failure. And what gnaws at me is in spite of all the attention right now, in just a few months his name will be forgotten when the next news story comes up. Everyone will ask oh, how could this happen? How could this be? And doesn't this story remind you of that one, oh what was his name - that kid who went missing for ten years?

I still haven't wrapped my head around this. The more I read, the more it appears that this family knew the adoptive mother was abusing the child, but did absolutely nothing. One of the articles referenced the fact that family members were told that Adam had been returned to the state, so that may explain why they took no further action during his absence.

Yeah, what I find so bizarre is just the blanket acceptance of that, not just with the Herrmans but with other families too. The idea of throwback adoptees has almost become acceptable. Back in the days when my lot was hitting adolescence, the for-profit 'teen treatment' industry was just catching on, but still. The idea of turning someone over to the state wasn't an option. At least not with anyone I knew :(

The good news is that Larry King spoke with both parents last night (the original family) via telephone and then the Hermann's attorney by satellite. The bad news is Larry never probed the attorney about the abuse, what the Hermann's own older son or other relatives have described. This was an opportunity to speak about how this little boy was so terribly abused and the only thing that came out was that it was the child's fault. The lawyer, who seemed very shaky and clearly not used to speaking in public, said Irwin/Adam had run away numberous times and was diagnosed as schizophrenic and bi-polar. Yet another excuse - and Larry never said "What difference would that make as to why they didn't report him missing?" Larry really dropped the ball and I hope that he will pick it up again and run with it all the way to the goal posts - justice for Irwin/Adam. Larry never even asked the lawyer about the Hermanns own public admittance to "disciplining" him with a belt and their fear of other children being removed if they reported Irwin/Adam's dissapearance.

I saw the bio dad on the local news last night--turns out he lives RIGHT HERE where I do...crazy. He made a statement aobut how when his son was placed with another family, he trusted their expertise and that they were doing the right thing. I'm ill about the whole thing.
